Net Connections for Communication Disorders and Sciences, An Internet Guide

This is the "top" of the huge Mankato State Site maintained by Judith Kuster, and contains major links to the other areas, including communication disorders, communicative disorders, speech science, speech therapy, speech pathology, audiology, and hearing impairments. The intended audience is broad: professionals and students in the fields of speech-language pathology, audiology, speech science; people with communication disabilities or differences and their support people. The site also provides links to discussion forums and electronic newsletters, the communication disorders and sciences library, speech and language disorders, the Stuttering Home Page, hearing and hearing disability, basic foundations for communication disorders and sciences, and online courses in communication sciences and disorders.

As is true throughout the reviews of Mankato State sites, the presentation score is relatively low because of the difficulty people seem to experience in using these sites (primarily in understanding how much is here), the lack of a search engine, and the lack of visuals.

The quality score is less than 5 because of the site's very inclusiveness. The site is simply complete, which means that some marginal links are included.

National
Stuttering
Association

Home Page
The Stuttering Home Page

Another Mankato State Page which is the most reliable internet links and information page on stuttering. There is a lot of on-board content, but the major strength is its all-inclusiveness and even-handedness in an area with a lot of controversy. Provides links to information sources, support groups, home pages of people who stutter, information for parents, teachers, kids and teens, and lists of recommended books and articles. There is also a considerable amount of content, including biographies of people who stutter, research articles on the treatment of stuttering, and a complete issue of the National Stuttering Project's newsletter, LettingGO.

Stuttering Foundation of America

The SFA is best known for its excellent, low-cost books and videos on stuttering therapy, many of which are used in graduate-level speech-language pathology courses. There is a complete list of these on their web site, which also includes copies of informative brochures on stuttering. The SFA has also posted its data base of American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) members in each U.S. state who are regarded as having expertise in stuttering therapy. Use of this list will need to be augmented by close questioning of therapists to find out their level of experience and expertise, as well as their approach to, and philosophy of, therapy.
