Many people shy away from meditation practice because they think it is difficult, requires adherence to a particular religious belief, or even that it may result in powerful, dangerous or uncontrollable thoughts.

In reality, meditation can be an easy and restorative activity when done regularly, once or twice a day for 20 to 30 minutes. And there are a number of ways to meditate, most of which don't require you to do the impossible (i.e., totally clear your mind of all thoughts.) Oddly enough, the very simplicity of meditation often makes it necessary for performance- conscious Westerners to receive assistance, guidance, and tutoring of some kind. And there are a number of types of meditation that people can learn, including some of the more difficult approaches, each of which provides specific kinds of  benefits.
